Residents of the Legacy Crossing Apartments near 105th and Fort Streets received an order to vacate their homes on December 19. Due to fire code and safety issues, 165 occupied units in 17 buildings are being vacated.
OCF is partnering with the City of Omaha and Heartland Family Services to help our neighbors in need. We will be collecting monetary donations to help the displaced residents, partnering with Heartland Family Services to meet their immediate and ongoing needs.
Through the Legacy Crossing: Emergency Relief Fund, OFC will be accepting donations to assist displaced residents with temporary housing costs, food assistance, and more.
The Foundation is uniquely positioned to assist when crises like these affect people in our community. We serve to connect people, ideas and funding and will rely on all of our expertise and local partnerships to serve people who are displaced.
This is going to be a long process for many of the displaced families, and OCF will continue to provide support through our partners as long as there is need. As of Wednesday night, December 21, Heartland Family Service had connected with all but four households at Legacy Crossing Apartments. They have identified 315 units available for displaced residents with similar price points and location needs.
Some people are staying with family and friends while permanent housing is secured. Others are staying in hotels. Seven families have secured permanent housing with nine other families in the final stages of renting new apartments. The Metro Area Continuum of Care for the Homeless along with Heartland Family Service are working to provide rent deposits and first-month rent payments. Families in need will receive grocery gift cards regardless of whether they are in a hotel or a home.
