Donna Reese Kennedy Schatz Biography

Donna Loy Reese was born on September 7, 1922, in Mitchell, South Dakota. From a young age, she took on the responsibilities of a caregiver for her young brothers following the passing of her mother and carried that steadiness into adulthood. She moved to Omaha where she married and spent 75 years building a life and community until her passing at 98 years old. Known for a strong sense of humor and steady care for others, she showed up consistently for family and friends.

Donna was a tremendous friend, leader, and entertainer. She ran a Cub Scout den. She co-founded and led the Duchesne Academy Boutique and Daisy Parade tour of homes, and chaired Duchesne’s first gala at the Union Pacific Station. She led numerous other organizations, including The Crook House, St. Joseph’s Hospital gift shop, and Christ Child Society, and volunteered for many more. Over the years, she participated in a myriad of clubs, making and keeping friends for decades: Sewing Club, Birthday Group, multiple book clubs, Drinking Club, bridge groups, Art Guild, SABAB (Sunday Afternoon Bridge and Backgammon), and Church Circles. Donna was a member of St. Margaret Mary’s Church for seventy years and was adept at creating community wherever she went.

By hosting dinner parties and building traditions, Donna brought people together across generations and helped them feel at home. Donna was often the first call for grandchildren and extended family members celebrating a milestone or working through a hard time. A haven for all, she welcomed loved ones with open arms, sage advice, and a mixing spoon of cookie dough. She sought out those who needed an extra dose of love, warming them with lightheartedness, calm perception, conversation, or the simple comfort of a quiet shared reading nook.

Through her steady presence and hospitality, Donna helped people feel connected within families, among friends, and across generations. The Donna Kennedy Schatz Foundation honors that same spirit of care and connection by supporting work that helps young children get a strong start, engages the caregivers who guide them, and elevates intergenerational connections in Omaha.
