On Feb. 6, a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Syria and Turkey, killing more than 36,000 people. Recovery efforts are expected to take months, possibly years.
Here is a list of organizations providing aid and assistance to victims:
- CARE works with impoverished communities, is accepting donations that will go toward food, shelter and hygiene kits, among other items.
- Doctors without Borders responds to medical emergencies around the world.
- OXFAM is an international organization that fights poverty, it is working with women’s cooperatives in Turkey to determine an appropriate immediate and long-term response plan.
- Syrian American Medical Society is a United States-based humanitarian group that supplies medical care in Syria and nearby countries.
- UNICEF is prioritizing water, sanitation, hygiene and nutrition, and also focusing on helping unaccompanied children locate their families.
- Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations provides medical relief and health care services inside Syria and to Syrian refugees in Turkey.
