The LGBTQIA+ Equality Fund was established to cultivate a community that supports, includes, and respects lesbian, gay bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and non-binary individuals and families in the Omaha metro. This grant making collaboration is guided by an advisory committee of LGBTQIA+ community members, an intentional decision by funding partners to redistribute power in our community.
In 2018, to help guide funding decisions in our community, The Equality Fund asked for input directly from LGBTQIA+ individuals. More than 300 community members provided feedback via survey, discussion circles, one-on-one interviews, and during Pride celebrations. The Fund found that fewer than half of survey respondents found that Omaha is an open-minded community and welcoming towards LGBTQIA+ people. Participants suggested that increasing knowledge and understanding about LGBTQIA+ communities could support further inclusion.

As parts of our community celebrate Juneteenth, an American holiday which commemorates June 19, 1865, the announcement of the abolition of slavery, we recognize that even within LGBTQIA+ communities, people can experience marginalization based on race and gender. Participants suggested that supporting diverse leadership, creating gathering spaces that are not alcohol focused, and making resources and information available could reduce in marginalization.
At Omaha Community Foundation, we believe in growing a better community for all, no matter the community member’s racial, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation, religious, or socioeconomic background.
