Kyle Hoback

Giving back from the start.

Kyle Hoback has a graduation card that he’s gone back to read so many times, he finally put it up on his bedroom wall. The card is from Walter Scott Jr., the benefactor of Kyle’s college scholarship, and it features this quote from Winston Churchill:

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

Kyle can’t put into words all he got from his scholarship and from the Peter Kiewit Institute at the University of Nebraska at Omaha –an education, community, a career he’s passionate about. And he wanted giving back to be at the heart of his life after graduation.

He started talking to the Omaha Community Foundation about a Charitable Checkbook® account while he was still a student. It doesn’t take much money to open a Charitable Checkbook, Kyle says, but once you have it, it keeps giving at the top of your mind. Plus, it’s easy. Kyle doesn’t even bother writing out checks anymore. He makes his donations online, and “the Foundation takes care of the rest,” he says.

So far, most of Kyle’s giving has gone to education, especially projects at the Peter Kiewit Institute. “We make a life by what we give,” he says.
Winston Churchill and Walter Scott – now, that’s pretty good company.
